This still life was set up on the grounds of the McNay Museum in San Antonio Texas. I don't usually paint like this, but when I am painting En plein air I have to work quickly. The time was mid morning with the light coming from above left. The tree adds a dark background to the central vase and flowers

Two Zinnias

I picked these two flowers from my garden and set them up with the sun behind them to get the light shining through the petals. They blocked out the sun and created the deep blue shadow in the foreground.

Zinnia and Stripes

This painting is part of my Studio Sale

Instead of having the stripped cloth as the background, I wrapped the cloth around the Zinnia stem and scrunched it together. The cloth creates an S movement and is interrupted by the diagonal of the flower.

Rose and Handkerchief

This painting is part of my Studio Sale

The background has a pattern that I painted and then scraped off leaving a colored ghost of the original. From there I glazed multiple layers of green to subdue  and unify the pattern. The rose and handkerchief are painted on top of the background. I try to set up still life studies that are not the typical compositions.

Welsh Rarebit is a dish made with a savory sauce of melted cheese and various other ingredients and served hot over toast. Eighteenth-century English cookbooks reveal that it was then considered to be a luscious supper or tavern dish.

Studies for German Rye Bread

After I set up the still life for German Rye Bread, I made a detailed drawing on gesso board, 12" x 9".

For the compositon structure I used what I learned in William A. Schneider's workshop Design/Composition Secrets of the Masters, www schneiderart.com

Then I reduced the image to 60% and printed out two copies. I made a value study and a color study and painted directly on the paper.

Finally, I painted the image below.

German Rye Bread-SOLD

Right now I am working on a series of still life paintings using ingredients from cooking recipes. This painting is called German Rye Bread, 12" x 9", oil on gesso board.

Dark rye bread became a staple, which lasted to the Middle Ages. Many different types of rye grain have come from places all over Europe such as Finland, Denmark, Russia, India, Baltic countries and Germany. In Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Poland, Belarus, Slovakia, India, and Russia, rye is the most popular type of bread.
