In my quest for places to paint,  I went to Palmetto State Park near Luling, TX. These ducks hung out near the banks of the lake. The ducks are a star attraction and get fed bread by the campers so when they see a group of kids walking towards them they run over to meet them.
This was a great place to paint and I will go back when the weather is better in the Spring and early Summer.

This is another scene from the same park. The dense trees let slices of light cast across the road.

Greenbelt Corridor Park, TX

Greenbelt Corridor Park, TX

This park is just north of Dallas. My son J and I took a walk down this road just as the sun as coming up. I took pictures to take back to the studio to paint. The light in the middle of the picture is the focal point.

Hill Country Road

Hill Country Road

The light was interesting coming from the middle left of the painting behind the trees that lost their leaves. The shadows across the road lead the eye to the other side.

Sisterdale, TX

Sisterdale is in the Hill Country with a lot of off road scenery like this. I wanted to capture this thin slice of bright light that came through the clouds.

Welfare, TX

Welfare is a small community just north of Boerne, TX. The country road that winds through it has a lot to paint and I go there often. This was early in the morning with this huge expanse of shadow that contrasts the ranch house.

Blanco State Park, TX

Blanco State Park, TX

I spent a good deal of Spring and Summer, 2014, scoping out state parks for a place to paint. Blanco is half way between Boerne and Austin and it is a great place to paint with lots to go back to. Most state parks are very good for camping and recreation, but now always loaded with scenery for a painter.
This was painted on an overcast day but warm enough for visitors to swim.

Algae Bloom

Algae Bloom

I found this slow moving river in the Hill Country north of Boerne, TX, where I live. The yellow color of the algae immediately caught my attention and the contrast against the reflection of the blue sky in the water.

Keough's Hot springs Campground, CA

Keough's Hot springs Campground, CA

I took a trip to California last summer, 2014, and met up with some friends, Claire and Andy. We spent a couple of days painting on location. While there were people camping in tents we stayed in a mobile home.
This small mobile home was down the road from where we stayed and I was taken by its color and the way the light touched the trees, home, and rocks with the mail boxes in front of it all.

Hide And Seek

Hide And Seek

Here again I am using a brick as a key player in the composition. None of these things have anything in common until a title is given. The lighting provides shadows that become objects themselves.

Waiting Just Around The Corner

Waiting Just Around The Corner

In most still life paintings you see objects on a table, shelf, window sill, desk, or some other domestic flat surface. Usually there is a tablecloth or the texture of the wood surface underneath the objects.

I want to get away from this tradition by using bricks for the surface and background. You can't tell where the persimmon is because it is not on a table in a kitchen or on a shelf on a wall etc. The space is close up and intimate and the location is unknown.

I like to use shadows as objects and as a way to lead the viewer to the center of interest. The shadows also create space  and form.

I grow persimmons in my garden and always have enough to paint and give away each year. I am very taken by their bright orange color contrasted with that matt purplish red-violet haze that happens as they get ripe.

Nothing In Common

Nothing In Common

I started collecting bricks to use in my still life paintings as an architectural interest and as a foundation to build a composition.
None of these objects have anything in common except basic design. Sometimes we get along with people we have nothing in common with, but there is a basic foundation that draws us together. In my still life work I want to express human interests and conditions through inanimate objects.
