Study In Opacity-Leighann Foster

I always set up a still life before I start painting and paint from life. I work out the composition, color, and values before I draw it on the board. In this case my intention was to leave out the tape, but I decided to include the tape as a painting of the drawing board study.

Again, I started with wallpaper and painted in the design in black and white. It is the same design I used in Magnolia In Window, my previous post. I painted in the green tape making sure it looked translucent. Then I taped off the white square and glazed it in white to look like the wax paper in the original study. I cut out the triangle and Swiss cheese from ¼” gesso board, sanded the edges, and painted the black and white pattern on to each object. Then I glazed over the triangle and cheese with their local colors, letting the color from underneath show through. You can see a little more of the pattern in the cheese in real life. Why Swiss cheese? I was making a sandwich and noticed the cheese was translucent and decided why not. I have geometric shapes on biomorphic shapes and the cheese jolts you and hopefully makes you smile a little.

You can see the 1/4” beveled edge and the sides are painted white so no frame is needed.

Magnolia In Window-Leighann Foster

I first started with a wallpaper design and transferred it to the 10” X 10” X 1.75" gesso deep cradle board. Then I painted it in bright colors, glazed it in a lighter translucent color, and finished it by taping off the window, and glazing it in an even lighter color.

Next I drew and cut out the flower and stem from a gesso board that was ¼” deep. After sanding the edges, I painted the flower from life. Then I glued the flower to the background. I painted the leaves directly on the background. I varnished the flower, stem, and leaves and left the background a with a matt finish. I am experimenting with different finishes to help create space.

My goal was to create several layers of space and opacity. The sides are sanded and painted so it does not need a frame. You can see the beveled edge that acts as part of the frame.

Accordion Rose-Leighann Foster

I am interested in working with still life, but not in the traditional manner. In this painting I am showing a top view of the background and a front to back view of the rose. Each has a different light source and I used direct painting for the rose and line drawing with glazing for the background.

Again my inspiration for the background was wallpaper. After I drew in the flower images I glazed the whole background with a medium colored pink. Then I taped it off to get the accordion look and painted the left sides lighter to make it look 3-D. I painted the edges and the depth with a transparent dark glaze. The flower pattern shows through all the transparent layers. I am keeping the framing within the canvas edge and painting the 1.5-inch sides so the painting does not need any additional framing.

I painted the rose in a traditional still life manner with the rose leaning over a tabletop casting a shadow on the front of the green tablecloth. This painting is framed and glued to the background.

Tree Dwellers-Leighann Foster

My inspiration for the background was wallpaper. I drew the images in and glazed the whole background with blue oil paint creating a mottled texture. It was painted on a gesso deep cradle board that is 1.5 inches deep. The depth was painted so the work does not need a frame.

Next I cut out the shapes for the bird’s nest and the pencils and painted these two subjects and framed and glued them to the background.

The name of the painting is Tree Dwellers. The birds, flowers, nest, and at one time the pencils, existed in a tree or around a tree.

Gentlemen, Choose Your Weapons-Leighann Foster

Here is another painting inspired by items I bought at the Dollar Store. I bought four squirt guns and a bag of balloons. I knew the guns would be the center painting with a small silver frame. I filled the balloons with water and drew them on the background board. I kept all the colors pastel and added many layers of glazing. Since this was not a thick board, I had a frame added to the outer edge.

The water fights we used to have as kids made me think of the title. Water balloons and squirt guns are and equal match I think. Gentlemen, choose your weapons.

Vanity-Leighann Foster

My inspiration for this painting came from wallpaper. The paper would have been hung in a ladies power room with its silver background and black line images of items a woman would use. I drew the images and glazed them several times to mute and push them back.

I found the glove box, gloves and necklace in an antique store. The box lid was underneath the box and had a gold trim. I immediately knew I was going to paint the box and frame it with a small narrow gold frame to make it look like the original lid. I place one glove and the necklace in the box and painted it and tried something different with the other glove. I drew it out on gesso board, cut it out with a coping saw, sanded the edges to make them round, and then painted the glove on the cutout. The boxed glove looks three-dimensional and so does the cut out of the second glove, but they seem to have different realities. They both stick out from the surface and are glued to the background. Again I beveled the edge of the background board and painted the sides so an additional frame isn’t needed. I am going to experiment more with cutting out images.

Solar Bear-Leighann Foster

In this painting I bought sunglasses at the Dollar Store. I didn’t know where I was going with this one and it developed day by day.

Global warming was on my mind so I put the seven continents in each lens suggesting everyone needed to pay attention and see what was happening. The animal we hear the most about, it seems, is the Polar Bear and how it's losing its habitat. I went back to the Dollar Store and bought an ice cube tray, froze water, and took pictures of melting ice cubes for the bear to stand on. My Polar Bear became Solar Bear with sunglasses.

The background is glazed and has a semi gloss finish. The bear is matt and the red background is varnished to a high glass. I found out I could create space using different glossy, semi-glossy and matt finishes. I also beveled the edge and you can see it is painted a slightly darker color, as is the three-quarter edge/frame. The bear is framed and the edge is finished with paint so an additional frame isn’t necessary.

Dog Fight-Leighann Foster

In Dog Fight I bought a toy glider from the Dollar Store and used a wallpaper pattern for the background. I drew the pattern in graphite and added the small gliders flying around to tie in with the central painting. I glazed the background to push the design back while letting the drawing show through. The title comes from WWII airplane fights called Dog Fights.

I framed the small painting in the center with a narrow frame lifting the work about three eights of an inch off the background. The larger background painting is on a two-inch, gesso deep cradle board. I gilded the two-inch depth with gold to act as a frame.
