The Teacher

The Teacher

A friend and I were taking pictures in Castroville, Tx last spring. The teacher is Bonnie White and she is helping her twin sister with a painting problem. Bonnie and I were is a class together some years ago and we both happen to be in Castroville that Saturday, me taking pictures and she painting with her sister.  We were both surprised.
Bluebonnets are everywhere in Texas in the spring but in this town they have planted Poppies for the tourists.
I wanted to lead in with the flowers to the center of interest, Bonnie and her sister and underplay the background. The flowers on the horizontal line are lighter and bluer to take the eye back and the curved clump of trees mimic the curve of her back.

Summer at the Splash Pad

Summer at the Splash Pad

A Splash Pad in case you didn't know, is a cement play area with round metal plates where water shoots up through the holes. It is a safe water experience for young children and can be found in city parks.
I happened to find one and took pictures of this little girl with her sand bucket.
I focused on getting the bright sunlight and deep shadows. The water took a little experimenting with to get the look and feel of squirting water.

Selling Shirts at the Flea Market

Selling Shirts at the Flea Market

This woman was selling men's shirts out of her car at the Flea Market.
She was completely set up with her umbrellas, chair, drink, and her purse to collect money.
I was intrigued by the light, shapes, and shadows and the confidence she portrayed in her setup and business.

Shopping at the Flea Market

Shopping at the Flea Market

I find a lot of subject matter in places like this.
I emphasized the light coming from the left to contrast with the shadows under the umbrellas.
This woman looked like she was on her way out.

Friends

Friends

In my quest for places to paint,  I went to Palmetto State Park near Luling, TX. These ducks hung out near the banks of the lake. The ducks are a star attraction and get fed bread by the campers so when they see a group of kids walking towards them they run over to meet them.
This was a great place to paint and I will go back when the weather is better in the Spring and early Summer.

Greenbelt Corridor Park, TX, Early Morning

Greenbelt Corridor Park, TX, Early Morning

This is another scene from the same park. The dense trees let slices of light cast across the road.

Greenbelt Corridor Park, TX

Greenbelt Corridor Park, TX

This park is just north of Dallas. My son J and I took a walk down this road just as the sun as coming up. I took pictures to take back to the studio to paint. The light in the middle of the picture is the focal point.
