Bwoom, Speaker For The Common Man

Bwoom, Speaker For The Common Man

This is an oil painting of Bwoom in the form of a helmet mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo formerly known as Zaire.

According to legend, Bwoom was sent to Earth by his father (the great God - Woot), to establish the Kuba kingdom. Bwoom symbolically speaks for the common man. This mask has raffia around the collar and was danced with a costume in important ceremonies.
Mask cultures in Africa don't see this as art. It wasn't until Picasso became interested in African Art that westerners called it Art.

12" x 16", oil on canvas board
