This is an oil painting of a mask from the Punu Culture of Gabon, Africa.
I find the mask cultures of Africa interesting and the simple stylized features especially beautiful.
It portrays a benevolent spirit of feminine beauty and is danced at times of public celebration like initiating young girls into society and at funerals to help the survivors deal with a family death. The mask wearer would stand on tall stilts wearing a long white robe. The dancer would remain anonymous so as not to offend the spirit world.
12" x 16", oil on canvas board
